“Golf is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose.” —Winston Churchill

During my first semester of graduate school, I noticed that a group of guys in my class did the same thing every day at one p.m. after classes ended. While I got to work and did my homework and case preparation, they headed off to play golf. As time went on, I got to know these men, and it was obvious that they were serious students who kept up with their assignments. It seemed ridiculous to me. I mean after all, there was work to be done! My afternoons were not playtime, how could theirs be? Well into the second semester, I felt comfortable enough to approach a few of my colleagues and ask them about their golf habits. They explained that they talked about their cases and their coursework while playing and then went home and did the work. Evidently, golf time was not simply playtime; things were being accomplished in a relaxed atmosphere away from the stress and grind of school.
